My London Borough client is seeking an experienced Interim Principal Planning Policy Officer to support the delivery of key planning policy work over a 6-month period. This is a hands-on interim role suited to someone who can hit the ground running and provide immediate value to a busy planning team.

• £40–£50/hour (Inside IR35)
• Hybrid / Flexible: Max one day per week in the office, often less

They are open to appointing a candidate with broad experience at Principal Planner / experienced Senior level, but the ideal areas of experience will enable you to complete the following duties: 

• Lead and contribute to the preparation, editing, and finalisation of Local Plan modifications, including coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
• Provide input on economy-related planning policy, including employment land, town centres, and strategic growth areas.
• Draft, review, and update planning policy documents, evidence base reports, and committee papers.
• Support public consultation processes and respond to representations as required.
• Advise on planning policy matters across the council, ensuring alignment with national and regional guidance.

Candidate Profile:

• Proven experience in local authority planning policy, ideally at Principal Officer level.
• Strong understanding of Local Plan preparation and examination processes.
• Ability to work independently and deliver high-quality outputs under tight deadlines.
• Experience in economic development policy is desirable but not essential.
• MRTPI status is desirable but not essential.

Working Arrangements:

• Flexible hybrid working: typically one day in the office every one to two weeks, with scope for less frequent attendance for strong candidates based further afield.
• Contract is inside IR35, with rates between £40–£50/hour, depending on experience
